Hello PV-A Team, Lorne here and today I wanted to go over something I hear FAR TOO OFTEN. I hear this so often that I thought it was time to explain WHY we are an exercise company first, and not the other way around,

I am sure you have all heard this statement “Weight loss and a healthy lifestyle is 80% nutrition”.

If you have not heard that, then GOOD, your mind has not yet been warped and you can make your own rational decision on your best path for your fitness goals.

Just today I received this message :

“So I have really been focusing on my eating and water intake this week like I mean I have been measuring and weighting EVERYTHING. Like this morning I only had 2tbsp of ham in my omelette lol I think u get the point so I started this on Monday drinking 100oz of water a day I weighed in at 197.6 on Sunday I jumped on my scale today just bc it was sitting in my living room weigh in Day is t till Saturday and it said 194.3 πŸ˜³πŸ™ˆπŸ™πŸ˜πŸ˜¬πŸ‘πŸ™ŒπŸ‘ŒπŸ’ͺ
And I only worked out once
80% diet is right”
Keep in mind that this is a friend and I value her results and efforts. She has never been on our program and I try my best to steer her in the right direction through her journey, but today instead of creating a single reply to her, I thought a post might be more beneficial for everyone.

Let’s take a minute to understand one thing- a healthy lifestyle is all about creating a balance. Finding something you enjoy and plan on doing for a lifetime, or else you will be constantly riding the roller coast of boom and bust. Ask yourself if it is REALLY about losing 30 lbs, or if it is about the outcome of the weight loss (the energy, confidence, being able to play with your kids, to walk up stairs without being winded etc). Also ask yourself if you would rather lose 30 lbs in 2 months and gain it all back by month 4, or if you would rather lose 10 lbs in 2 months and have lost 20 lbs by the 4th month and so on.

Weight loss in general can be broken down very complex or very basic- so let’s use a basic break down for the purpose of this post. For me to lose 1 lb of fat I need to burn 3500 calories. So simple math is 3500 calories= 1lb of fat.

Now let’s dive into the nutrition and weight loss. Everyone has a basic metabolism, for a basic break down again lets just say this is how many calories your burn in a day standing and breathing. The average for a female can range from 1200 calories to 2000 calories. The average male can range from 2000-3000 calories (once again this is very basic numbers just for illustration). So, lets take an average female with a basic metabolism of 1,500 calories. Lets say she has an amazing nutrition day and eats only 1,000 calories. She has created a demand of 500 calories for the day (burning 1500- only put in 1000). If we take what she burned (500) and divide it by a lb of fat (3500 calories) we know that it is going to take 7 days to lose a lb of fat (3500/500=7).

“BUT LORNE, I WANT TO LOSE IT FASTER”. So, now lets say she only puts in 500 calories, now she is losing Β a lb every 3.5 days (3500/1000-3.5). This can go on and on.

The big question is what do you think happens to your body when you do this?

If your body is consistently burning more then you are putting in, it is going to get to a point where it says “holy crap, I better slow down my metabolism” and it will do just that. So the same body that was burning 1,500 calories will go to 1400, 1300, 1200…. and so forth. This is why most “diets” have an end point where people stop losing.

Now I want to put my other degree into place here and talk about what happens mentally with this affect. If your weight loss is slowing down, what do you think most people do to kick it back into gear? Well, many people decide to eat less to create that gap again and to continue with the weight loss, and that is how many people get stuck in eat disorders and an unhealthy relationship with food.

But let’s say she chooses not to eat less and less and she does the opposite and say” I just want to eat what I was eating before”, and she puts in 1500-2000 calories a day. With her lowered metabolism , she will begin to gain all the weight back just as quickly as she took it off. You can sympathize with how this person will feel now that she is putting the weight on that she worked so hard to take off.




So let’s look at the text that I received and run these scenarios in your head and ask yourself WHY I wasn’t jumping for joy when I read it. You can imagine that I am anything but super happy and that I am actually scared. This idea of 80% nutrition is creating such an unhealthy balance that it ends up leaving people with heart ache and frustration in the end. Not alone, this lady and EVERYONE has been eating a certain way for 10-20-30-40-50-60-70-80-90+ years, and to change that habit can be the hardest.

Keep in mind that I AM NOT SAYING THAT NUTRITION IS NOT IMPORTANT- AS IT VERY MUCH IS, I am simply saying that people need to find that balance


Here is what I propose, and why I am such a great believer in the 7 basic nutrition rules COMBINED with exercise 3 days a week.

Exercise 3 days a week which will in turn INCREASE your metabolism. It helps your body to burn more and more calories each day. Follow the 7 basic nutrition rulesΒ 80% of the time (that means 20% of the time you give us the bog ol’ finger and tell us to screw off;) ) and find a balance between the 2 that you plan on continuing with for the rest of your life. Β Especially as you age and your metabolism is affected and influenced by more factors, is is so important to have exercise on your side to help balance the load. We find as well that when you exercise- people in turn eat healthier as a by product, have more energy, feel better, and its one of the easiest things to change. Rant done! πŸ™‚
